If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably already got yourself a nice set of pet steps; but if you haven’t yet purchased dog stairs, you might want to take a minute to seriously consider the benefits. Every time your dog jumps on and off of objects such as furniture, his joints absorb the impact. Over time, this can lead to the early development of arthritis, not to mention that any time your dog jumps from something, he risks the possibility of a broken bone. Besides, pet stairs are wonderful to use by the bed to keep your dog from pouncing on and off the bed, simultaneously jolting you awake.

Some dogs may not take to using pet stairs straight away. This is not uncommon an uncommon occurrence, especially if the dog is older. All it takes is a little effort on your part to show your dog (in a way that he can understand) that using the stairs is worthwhile to him.

Showing your dog “what’s in it for him” isn’t nearly as hard as it sounds. One way you can do this is by positioning the stairs where they will be used most and dangling your dog’s favourite toy or snack to lure him up. This may not work the first couple of attempts, but perseverance really does pay off. If your dog tends to be easily excitable, dangling his toy or a treat in front of him may not be the best trick. Instead, try sitting on the bed or sofa—or wherever you plan to position the stairs—and call to your dog. If he tries to climb up without the stairs, give him a gentle scolding and place him in front of the stairs, repeating the process over until he uses the dog stairs correctly.

You may be interested in a more “extreme” method of training your dog to use his pet stairs. This method involves denying your dog total access to the furniture unless he uses the pet stairs to climb up. For instance, if your dog primarily likes to lie on your bed, but refuses to use the steps, tell him to get off—or bodily remove him if you have to. Place him in front of the steps and motion for him to climb up. Do not let him onto the bed until he uses the steps. As with any type of training, it’s good to encourage your dog with words of praise. Dogs respond more to their owner’s tone of voice more than the actual words, therefore a cheery “Good boy!” goes a long way in convincing your dog that he’s pleasing you when he uses the stairs.

If you have a large dog that enjoys spending time outside consider purchasing a dog outdoor large bed for them to enjoy. They can take a quick nap on their large outdoor dog bed while still enjoying the fresh air.

If it is a warm sunny day a large outdoor dog bed will be particularly nice for your pup as he or she will have plenty of space to stretch out during their nap. In the colder months dogs typically sleep in smaller balls so size might not be as much of an issue.

There are a number of large outdoor dog beds to choose from. Picking one that will best accommodate your dog can be a challenge. Each dog sleeps in their own unique way and there are beds designed to accommodate just about everything.

Different Types Of Large Outdoor Dog Beds

If your dog likes to sleep with their head propped up on something look for a large outdoor dog bed that has a bolster attached to it. Some dog beds will have a bolster that wraps around all edges of the dog bed which helps them to get extra cozy. Other styles of dog beds only have a bolster that wraps half way around the dog bed. This gives your dog some options. If your dog wants to just lay out flat or elevate their head they will be able to do so with ease in this type of dog bed.

Other large outdoor dog beds were simply designed to act as big pillows. They will be big enough to allow your dog to fully stretch out. If your dog likes to curl up in a ball during their nap they can do so as well. When curled up in a ball this type of big pillow bed will snuggle in around your pup which will help to keep them not only warm but cozy.

Another type of bed is the outdoor canopy dog bed. This type of dog bed provides a luxury environment for your dog as they stretch out to take a nap in a nice shady spot created by the canopy of the bed.

Many of the largest outdoor dog beds are just simple squares or rectangles that have some type of foam core inside of the cover. These are pretty basic and generally offer no frills for your dog. The bigger dog beds get the more expensive they can be so this can be a budget friendly option as well.

Older dogs, dogs with hip dysplasia and just about any other dog would love an orthopedic dog bed. If you are considering getting one for your dog, consider getting as large an orthopedic dog bed as you can afford and can fit in your home. There are some ridiculously tiny orthopedic dog beds made for toy dogs, but even toy dogs need their personal space. For them, an orthopedic dog bed large enough for a fat Beagle would be a large orthopedic dog bed.

What About The Cost?

Large orthopedic dog beds are far more expensive than traditional pillow or beanbag dog beds. If you can only afford a small orthopedic dog bed and have a small dog suffering from joint or mobility problems, then that would be better than nothing. But if you have a dog that’s at least thirty pounds, then you should consider investing in a large or very large orthopedic dog bed.

In the long run, you’ll pay less for a large orthopedic dog bed than you would for a series of regular beds and trips to the vet. Large orthopedic dog beds last for a long time, which is one reason why they cost so much more than a usual dog bed. They also are made with little extras like reversible covers, easy clean covers and the dog’s name, too. They also stand up to dog claws a lot better than a beanbag dog bed.

Not The Same Old Mattress

Have you ever really watched your dog sleep? They go into quite a lot of contortions. A dog that only stays in one position in sleep all night is usually not having a very deep, satisfying sleep. Good sleep is key in overall canine health and combating illnesses. This is one reason why you need to get the largest orthopedic dog bed that you can afford.

If you have an older dog or a dog who loves to get messy, then don’t worry. There are many waterproof orthopedic dog beds on the market. Of course, they won't survive being stranded at the bottom of the ocean, but won't rot when a rain drenched doggy decides to take an afternoon nap on them.

Many large orthopedic dog beds are nearly as long as your mattress. In case of emergency, your dog probably won’t mind sharing his or her large orthopedic dog bed with you. You never know when your own mattress is going to give up the ghost -- or if your spouse send you to the doghouse.

Every dog needs a bit of pampering and one great way to do this is by purchasing a nice luxury dog bed for them to sleep in. This type of dog bed will generally offer aesthetic aspects that would not typically be found in a standard dog bed. Special fapics may be used to construct the designer luxury dog bed. You might also notice that the bed has a unique shape or unusual feature as well.

Because it is a luxury dog bed, be prepared for the large price tags that they will have. These typically will not be found in a typical pet store either. Take a trip to a pet boutique or powse around online to try and locate a luxury dog bed store near you.

Different Types Of Luxury Dog Beds

Some luxury dog beds resemble ordinary dog beds in shape but perhaps provide a high-end cover to give it that luxurious quality. This type of dog bed will typically be made with only the best materials. While some standard dog beds are stuffed with inexpensive polyester filling, a luxury dog bed will likely be stuffed with premium materials such as goose down feathers. Your pup will crawl into this dog bed and take a nice long nap in superior comfort.

There are several popular producers of mattresses that make luxury dog beds as well. This type of dog bed can be found in a decent amount of stores. The dog bed typically resembles a standard mattress in appearance. The inside of the mattress also implements the same type of technology that would be found in a mattress as well. A luxury dog bed designed like this can be great for those dogs that suffer from joint ailments or back problems.

Some luxury dog beds even provide heating and cooling features to keep your dog comfortable. If it is a cold night the bed can provide a warm environment for your dog to get cozy in. If it happens to be a hot summer evening, the bed will also keep your pet cool.

Most luxury dog beds should be designed so that you can remove the cover and wash it. If it does not feature a removable cover make sure that it is washable as a whole piece. It would be unfortunate to spend large amounts of money for a bed that can’t be washed. You should also check with the maker of the bed to see if the covers can be replaced or new filling can be purchased for it if it gets worn out.

If you want to make a large dog bed the first thing you need to do is gather the necessary materials together. There are more complex dog beds that you can make but if you just want to stick to a simpler version, a cheap large dog bed that will be just enough for your dog and offer them the comfort that they need.

The first thing to do will be to get the supplies and materials to make the dog bed. You can use a quilt or even a piece of foam, either will work well here. If you want to make an orthopedic cheap large dog bed for your pet, you can just use a high density foam that will be 7 plus inches thick.

You can find the materials to make your cheap large dog bed at almost any home hardware store, and just make sure that you take the basic measurements before you head out to buy any materials or other supplies. Measure the dog’s length, head to tail, while they are stretched out and measure their width as well.

Make sure that you leave lots of extra room so that your dog has time to move around in the bed, because of course you will not want it to be so small that the dog has to squeeze themselves in just to fit inside.

Getting Started

To start making your cheap large dog bed, make sure that you have all your supplies on hand, and a design or pattern that you are going to be able to follow. This way you have something to refer to and will be sure that the bed will end up being the right size for the dog.

Remember, if you need, you can have a professional do the work for you and this may cost you a bit more but will ensure that the bed will turn out right.

Extra Ideas

There are also a few ways that you can spice up your cheap large dog bed. For instance you may want to make an extra large bed so that more than one dog can fit inside. Or you may want to build a wooden frame to make a small sofa bed using old couch pillows or a foam mattress for the pad.

Or you can put a pocket on the side and put a bone or grooming tools inside. You can really personalize the dog bed however you want, and they are sure to love it.

The Scottish Terrier also known as the Scottie or the Highland or Aberdeen Terrier is reknowned for its distinctive terrier personality. There are four other Scottish Terrier breeds, West Highland White Terriers, Dandie Dinmont and Skye, Cairn.
The characteristics and personality and more importantly the dog care of the Scottie comes from its historic roots. You should compare characteristics with with the other top dog breeds, of which there are around 500.
The Aberdeen Terrier is often given the nickname of “little diehard”. Originally coined in the 19th century by George, the fourth Earl of Dumbarton. George IV had a pack of Scottish Terriers, supposedly so valiant that they were nicknamed “Diehards” and were the inspiration for the name of his Regiment, The Royal Scots, “Dumbarton’s Diehards”.
It is impossible to be sure of the real origins of the Highland Terrier, but it was bred for controlling small rodents in Scotland for centuries. It could be the oldest of the five Scottish Terrier breeds , with some historical evidence dating back to the 16th Century.
The source of the name “terrier” is the Latin terra denoting “earth”. The Scottish Terrier was a hunter where these petite legged, powerful dogs were designed and built for the function of killing small pest animals such as badgers, foxes and rats out of their burrows.
Scottish Terriers looks are characterised by long fur, heavy eyebrows and whiskers. The stiff coat exists in many colors, including black, brindle or wheaten of any shade. Scotties with ‘Wheaten’ (straw to nearly white) coats sometimes occur, but should not be confused with the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier or West Highland White Terrier.
Scottish Terriers are sturdy, with a muscular body and a long neck. A Scottie has a long head relative to its body which averages about 10 or 11 inches high. The Scottie has stiff ears and tail. Highland Terrierwere bred with strong tails so that could be pulled out of holes when they were wedged after digging after vermin and voles.
Scottiehave small, intense almond-shaped and dark eyes.
The Scottie personality is one of freedom and will power. Often people say a Scottie imagines he is an Irish Wolfhound in height! To the point that he is quite fearless that often appears idiotic in the face of a much larger dog, when he suddenly realises that he is less than a foot in height. Professional dog walkers, such as London Dog Walking love to walk them, they are never feel frightened by the bigger dogs!
Height at withers for both sexes of the Aberdeen Terrier should be roughly 25 cm (9.8 in), and the length of back from withers to tail is roughly 28 cm (11 in). Generally a well-balanced Scottie dog should weigh 8–10 kg (19–22 lb) and a female from 8–9.9 kg (18–22 lb). Highland Terrier are about 11–15 inches (28–38 cm) in height.
Scottish Terrierare very alert, jovial and confident. They typically live from 10 and 13 years.
Highland Terriers, whilst being very loving, can also be especially immovable. Because of this stubbornness, a Scottish Terrier needs firm, but kind handling from a puppy or it will dominate the household. Every new Scottie addition needs to have a clear puppy training plan.
The Scottie makes a great watchdog because it normally only barks when essential and in the main only for strangers. Dog socialisation is crucial as it is a courageous breed that may be antagonistic around other dogs unless introduced and instructed to different dogs whilst a puppy or young.
Because the Scottie were bred to hunt and fight badgers and other pests they love to dig as well as chase small pests, such as mice, rats and squirrels. For this reason it is recommended that Highland Terriers are generally walked on a leash.
Whilst Scotties are normally a robust breed they have a propensity of developing some cancers than other purebreds. Studies have identified 6 cancers that Scottish Terriers are more likely to be at risk of (versus other breeds) are: (in descending order) bladder cancer and other transitional cell carcinomas of the lower urinary tract (more normal in more mature dogs and more frequently in females so keep an eye on blood in the urine, straining to urinate and frequent urination – and search veterinary assistance); malignant melanoma; gastric carcinoma; squamous cell carcinoma of the skin; lymphosarcoma and nasal carcinoma.
To help prevent cancer in any dog, ensure that your dog has minimal exposure to herbicides, pesticides, solvents and cigarette smoke; be prudent when treating dogs with some flea medications; provide a healthy, vitamin-rich diet (low in carbohydrates, high in vegetables) and plenty of exercise.
The Aberdeen Terrier are also sensitive to von Willebrand disease (vWD) which symptoms are varying degrees of bleeding tendency, normally easy bruising, nosebleeds and bleeding gums.
The second is craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO); sometimes known as lion’s jaw, that created extensive bony modifications in the mandible and skull. Normally occurring between the ages of 3 and 8 months. The lesions normally stop growing after twelve months or so, and may regress. The firm swelling of the jaw, drooling, pain, and difficulty in eating. This is also an inherited disease and if major, could be difficult for the dog.
Because of these inherited diseases it is highly recommended to buy direct from a breeder, who can show he has not had a problem with these diseases.
Famous Scotties include Roosevelts – Fala and former President George W. Bushs’ Barney. Infact the Aberdeen Terrier is the only dog breed that has lived more than three times in the White House.
Other famous people who are known to have owned the Scottie include: Humphrey Bogart; Julie Andrews; Queen Victoria; Theodore Roosevelt; Dorothy Lamour; Tatum O’Neal owned a Highland Terrier. She was said to be so upset by her dog’s death to cancer and old age that she relapsed into drugs.
The Scottie is also a player token in the board game, Monopoly.
A Highland Terrier and a West Highland White Terrier are pictured on the Black & White whisky label. In Enid Blyton’s Mystery Series books, there is Buster a Scottish Terrier, who is often part of the mysteries.
So all in, a rightfully popular dog breed, particularly in personality per weight, but you will need to train and be firm with your Scottish Terrier.

Arthritis is a harmful affliction that doesn't just affect humans. Dogs, cats, and many types of animals can suffer from this debilitating disease, which causes joints to wear down and movement to become painful. Even the most normally mundane tasks, like walking or even rolling over while sleeping, can cause sufferers to stiffen up and feel extremely sore. A dog that suffers from arthritis won't move around as much, nor will he be nearly as playful. However, there are steps you can do as his owner to ensure that he can enjoy life as painlessly as possible. A heated orthopedic dog bed can greatly help towards relieving the pain of arthritis in your dog.

Reduce Swelling

Heated orthopedic dog beds combine two great practices into one package. The heat helps to relieve swelling, improve blood flow, and generally counteract the harsh effects of arthritis. While it won’t be able to provide full relief, it will greatly reduce the discomfort that your dog feels. Another great technology is orthopedics, which have been developed for many years now. You might be familiar with orthopedic pillows and the like for humans, helping to increase comfort while sleeping as the materials work to support human bone structure. Orthopedic beds for dogs help to conform to the dog’s body so that every point of the body is supported, and there are less aches as a result.

Another great piece of furniture that you might want to consider purchasing for your dog is a heated outdoor dog bed. You’ll give your dog the same great health benefits in a package that will be able to survive the outdoors. This way, you can leave your dog outside for an hour or two without worrying about the temperature outside. Still, heated orthopedic dog beds are the superior choice for indoors, as the extra orthopedic benefits far outweigh the extra sturdiness built into exterior models. Unfortunately, heated orthopedic dog beds can cost hundreds of dollars, though chances are that you can find one for not much more than any other dog bed.

If you are still up in the air, just imagine how painful arthritis can be at times. A heated orthopedic dog bed will combat it in two different ways for a very effective relief of that pain, and your dog will be all the happier for it. Even if your dog doesn't have arthritis, a heated orthopedic dog bed can help it have more energy and get more restful sleep, and your dog will be friendlier as a result. Instead of just using medicine, try to combat the affliction itself, and the pain relief efforts will be much more effective.
